RESPONSIVENESS
Briefly, an pneumatic system is more responsive than an
hydraulic system. Why? Because of the lower viscosity of
air, that can be ''pumped'' more rapidly than oil. While the
response time of both the hydraulic and the pneumatic systems
is measured in mere tenths of a second, the pneumatic system
is fully 40% faster than the hydraulic system.
Is response time relevant? We think so. The faster a
stabilization system can react to the rolling motion of the
boat, the less likely the boat is to roll at all, and in
high seas, the smaller that roll will be. The Gyro-Gale
pneumatic stabilization system has been compared by
independent observers to our hydraulic competitors, and
predictably, the pneumatic system has been judged to have
been by far the most responsive, i.e. the most comfortable.
EASE OF INSTALLATION
The pneumatic stabilization system is much easier to
install than the hydraulic system and it takes up less space.
*At this time, Gyro-Gale is the only manufacturer of pneumatic
stabilization systems in the world.
Because there are no electrical components to the pneumatic
system, one major source of complication is eliminated
from the installation procedure. Also, the size of the
components of the pneumatic system are significantly smaller,
thus, are more easily installed within your yacht. Accord-
ingly, less inconvenience is caused subsequently by their
The interior fin mechanism of the pneumatic system
presence protrudes only two and one half (2 1/2") inches above
the hull, while in the hydraulic system, the protrusion above
the hull is a minimum of fourteen (14") inches. This is a
substantial difference, and on a vessel where space always is at
a premium, it is a major consideration.
Another factor to be discussed later at greater length
is that the fin component used on the Gyro Gale pneumatic
system never requires reinforcement of the hull, while hull
reinforcement is almost always required where hydraulic
systems are utilized. Hull reinforcement is both costly and
time consuming.
